Ubiquitous Anita Yuen shows up as his Hong Kong partner, who also happens to be double-agent working for the opposition. Under normal circumstances, we would have taken the slower yet cheaper over night train, but because we failed to plan our route far enough in advance, we we’re left with few other options. In the end though, we didn’t let the extra cost bother us too much, since it gave us an opportunity to experience high speed train travel for the first time, while also furthering our goal of traversing the length of the country entirely overland. Carrying a quarter of the world’s total rail traffic, China’s railway network is one of the largest and busiest in the world. In 2007, high speed rail service was introduced and since then, ridership has skyrocketed to over 1.3 million passengers per day on the HSR network alone. In December of 2012, the high speed route between the Xi’an North and Beijing West railway stations was opened. With the trains approaching a maximum speed of 300km/hr, the journey between these two monster cities can be made in just under 5 hours. Lynn - Built in 1406, the Forbidden City is an enormous complex that consists of 980 buildings, spanning 180 acres. It took 14 years to complete this behemoth city and required over a million laborers and 100,00 artisans. The Forbidden City was named as such, because it was forbidden for any commoner to enter. Not only that, any commoner who even saw the emperor with his commoner eyes was killed, even if the emperor was outside the city gates! So I’m not going to lie, when I crossed through that threshold as a foreigner, it gave me goosebumps. For 500 years, 24 emperors lived and ruled from this ceremonial and political center. Many servants and even some emperors lived their entire lives within these walls. We started to feel the same sense of being in a bubble as all the halls, gardens and temples started to look the same. There are signs in English scattered all over the city but even after reading them, the significance of what we were looking at was still a bit lost on us. Our favorite signs though, were the ones that included the imperial names of the buildings, some of our favorites being: Belvedere of Embodying Benevolence, Pavilion of Auspicious Clarity, Palace of Gathered Elegance and... The irony of the once forbidden city, is that it’s now one of the most touristed places in all of China with over 7 million visitors a year! Here you can also get your fill of knick knacks and even a DVD experience of flying over the city… if you’re into that sort of thing! You have to use your imagination, but if you find yourself in a quiet corner of the city, it’s possible to get a feeling of being in ancient China. Hopefully, you’ll imagine yourself as royalty and not as a concubine… or a eunuch. i-Go-2 CHiNA - Beijing - The Forbidden City & 7 Palaces The Forbidden City in Beijing China - Imagine seven gigantic open spaces, each the size of two or three football pitches. Now put a palace in the centre of each and then line them up one after the other. That is my impression of "The Forbidden City" - with Beijing Soldiers making sure that it is protected. Soldiers marching up and down. Imagine 7 football pitches with a small palace in the middle of each. Start at pitch 1 see palace, go to pitch 2 & palace 2, do this 7 times & you have seen the Forbidden City. After you have walked it you might feel that it should have remained Forbidden.

Director: Super Spy -Stephen Chow Sing-Chi, Lee Lik-Chee A tonnage of verbal comedy can't offset the fact that this Stephen Chow film works on both physical and emotional levels. Slow to start and rough around the edges, the film still rounds into one of Chow's most satisfying yet. Stephen Chow stars in (and co-directs) this wacky spy flick that's more Casino Royale than From Russia with Love. Chow plays dumb but cool as pork vendor/secret agent Ling Ling Chat (007), a forgotten Mainland agent called into action when some dinosaur bones go missing. Ubiquitous Anita Yuen shows up as his Hong Kong partner, who also happens to be double-agent working for the opposition. She's assigned to kill him, but slowly starts to melt before his strange, non-sensical charms. Meanwhile, any semblance of an actual plot is destoyed beneath various timeouts for physical and verbal gags. And there's laughter. The pairing of Chow plus Yuen yields surprising laughs, though their chemistry is nonexistent to begin with. The film starts deceptively slow, and appears to go nowhere through the first half-hour. However, when things pick up, they pick up incredibly well. Chow's superspy is more fool than fantastic, but he manages to create a thoroughly loveably spy savant who packs more toughness than even the viewer can imagine. As the assassin in paw-print pajamas, Anita Yuen seems miscast, but her comedic charms prove an excellent foil to Chow's inanity. What makes the film a bit tough for casual viewers are the numerous verbal puns that litter the film. Unlike some of Chow's earlier films, the jokes aren't dismissed with yet another quickly-inserted mo lei tau moment. Sometimes the jokes include long pauses for appropriate laughter - which can prove frustrating for those who have no idea what's supposed to be so funny. Also, the film seems incredibly cheap even by Hong Kong standards. However, that doesn't take away from the obvious visual humor of the film, which takes its cues from Chow's anime-flavored performance style. Bond films are obviously parodied, but references to C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri and Days of Being Wild pop up, too. Many of the visual gags are just more nonsense thrown on top of the pile. In that, they're not unlike Chow's verbal mo lei tau. Where the film really departs from previous Chow films is in character. Stephen Chow's characters have typically two varieties: the pathetically loveable loser who overcomes all odds, or the sarcastic and self-assured misfit who inevitably triumphs over those around him. Unlike those other characters, Ling Ling Chat isn't inherently engaging. It's only through Chow's even performance and some cool narrative trickery that we come to really like and care for Chat. From Beijing with Love works best when it sticks to the physical humor and situation comedy instead of the esoteric verbal gags. At first glance it's not a drop-dead funny movie, and by now it's not even Chow's best film (God of Cookery wins that award). However, it's hard to find a Stephen Chow film that grows on the viewer as much as this one. Awards: 14th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards • Nomination - Best Actor (Stephen Chow Sing-Chi) • Nomination - Best Supporting Actor (Law Kar-Ying)
